Integra Adds New Rod Option to Spinal Systems

Integra Lifesciences, an orthopedic device company based in Plainsboro, N.J., has added a second cobalt chrome rod for its Daytona and Malibu spinal systems. Known as the Enhanced Strength and Stiffness rod, or ESS+ rod, reportedly provides additional strength and stiffness over the existing cobalt chrome rod. Integra aims to enter controlled market release in the third quarter of 2013. Integra now offers multiple rod options in its various deformity systems, including titanium alloy, stainless steel and cobalt chrome, which provide more options spinal deformity correction procedures.

“Deformity correction is a specialized segment of the spinal fixation market, where cases are often complex and outcomes may be life-changing,” said Brian B. Nielsen, M.D., Tucson Orthopaedic Institute in Arizona. “The type of rod material is frequently dictated by the patient’s condition. The ESS+ rod is a welcome addition to Integra’s product line, and demonstrates their commitment to provide us with a broader selection of treatment options.”

The Daytona deformity system, which features technology from the Malibu line, is designed to address standard to complex deformity cases in adult patients. According to Integra, its specific combination of implant designs, materials and instrumentation creates versatility. The screws feature extended travel housings for 30 mm of built in rod reduction, and the instrumentation accommodates multiple derotation techniques. The new ESS+ rod is available in straight and lordotic (where the spine has dipped) and/or kyphotic (where the spine has too much of an arch) configurations.
